Character Artist

The ideal candidate will work within the art team to create photo-real 3D characters based on reference materials while aligning with the artistic vision and concept of the game. Attention to detail and a solid understanding of art fundamentals including proportion, color theory and design is required.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Realizes the overall artistic vision of characters based on design, concepts and descriptions
  • Designs, models and textures high quality 3D characters, paying close attention to anatomical proportions and physiology
  • Contributes to character designs by finding appropriate reference material and generating 2D concepts as needed
  • Collaborates with Art, Animation and Design department leads to create technically sound, engaging and memorable characters
  • Works with the Art Director to understand art direction and style requirements, and to create and efficient, streamlined pipeline
  • Mentors and trains junior artists

 

Skills, Attributes and Education required:

  • 3+ years of experience creating characters for video games
  • Formal art education such as BFA from accredited art or design school or equivalent level of experience required
  • Excellent character modeling and texturing techniques, both high and low poly
  • Skilled in traditional 2D art such as drawing and painting
  • Excellent understanding of human and creature anatomy with a keen eye towards form, structure and silhouette
  • Strong proficiency in modeling, texturing and lighting 3D characters
  • Understands the needs of animation and ensures geometry functions as requested
  • Solid understanding of game engine, pipeline and workflow required for creating characters and uses this understanding to anticipate potential problems
  • Receives feedback and modifies work based on direction
  • Excellent communication skills: Can effectively communicate ideas verbally and with imagery
  • Ensures consistency in art style and quality of own work
  • Uses in-house tools as appropriate; provides feedback to improve the tools
  • Follows schedules and meets deadlines
  • Experience with Maya or 3DSMax, Photoshop, Z Brush
  • Accurately estimates time to complete work and manages competing priorities
