We Don’t Just Make Games

We make games! But you already know that. What you may not know: we believe in giving back. From our own backyard to the other side of the planet, we are proud to partner with agencies to help change lives.

On the Home Front

Here in Vancouver, we support HomeStart Foundation, a non-profit which helps people in need furnish their homes with donated items. Over the years, they have accepted lightly used items from us such as TV’s, lamps and other furniture, which we know went to good homes.

Located just a couple of blocks away from our studio is Covenant House, which provides shelter and services to children and youth in need. They were distributing backpacks filled with basic necessities this winter, so we added some warm UFG hoodies and T-shirts to help our city’s young people.

In December, the studio supports Child’s Play. We fundraise for the month, then shop for books, toys and games requested by BC Children’s Hospital and Victoria General Hospital. So far, we have donated over $16,000 to Child’s Play; that equates to a lot of crayons, videogames, movies and Lego.

This past December we mixed things up a little, and challenged eight other Vancouver-based games studios to a food drive challenge: fill as many boxes (provided by the Greater Vancouver Food Bank) as possible with non-perishables. The best part (besides all the studios filling a total of 624 boxes): the trash talking on social media (#gamersgathergrub)!

Once 2016 rolled around, the studio returned to its year-round commitment to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, supporting them with cash donations. They help over 500 women and children per day, ranging from meals to an emergency shelter and from counselling to HIV / AIDS case management.

The Away Team

Since 2008, we’ve also been helping people as far flung as Cambodia and Kenya, through Kiva. After seven years, we are proud to say: we have surpassed $100,000 in loans, and helped over 1,100 people in more than 60 countries. This non-profit organization assists impoverished people in developing countries with small loans. When our loans are re-paid, we then re-loan the funds, ensuring we continuously helping a wide variety of people across the globe.

And finally, because we have so many guys employed at UFG, it only makes sense to support Movember every November. During this very hairy time, the dudes commit to growing a moustache for 30 days, where the facial hair become a symbol for men’s health – men’s cancers, poor mental health, and physical inactivity. At the end of the month, we award our brave growers fun prizes, and goofy titles such as “Most Likely to Have Food Stuck in It” and “Slightly More Impressive Than My Grandmother’s”.
